Description:An alternate method of gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID) for the analysis of phenol (108952), o-cresol (95487), m-cresol (108394) and p-cresol (106445) was tested to determine if the procedure would achieve satisfactory sampling and analytical results, while providing a simpler method for collection and analysis. Three different concentrations of phenol and each cresol isomer were tested with XAD-7 polymer solid sorbent tubes. Six tubes of each concentration level, stored in the dark at 5 degrees-C for 1, 15, or 30 days were analyzed. Fresh calibration standards were prepared daily for each analysis. A test for the presence of high humidity was also performed. Precision was determined using duplicate injections of eight standard calibration solutions. Results indicated that both Stabilwax-DA capillary columns and Stabilwax capillary columns achieved baseline separation of analytes. Peak resolution, overall peak shape and precision were improved with the Stabilwax-DA column. The author concludes that the sample collection and preparation methods are easier and simpler than those in current NIOSH chromatographic methods. The method provides for complete baseline separation of the measured compounds while yielding a low limit of detection which is reproducible. Problems with humidity are eliminated while sample recovery is improved. [Description provided by NIOSH]
