Agriculture-related sprain and strain injuries, 1985-1987

  Data from 1985 to 1987 from the Supplemental Data System of the Bureau of Labor Statistics were used to obtain strain and sprain injury data for agricultural employees. Sources of employment data were the biennial surveys conducted by the US Department of Agriculture and the annual County Business Patterns census. There were 71,098 compensation claims filed by agricultural workers. Of these claims, 37.2% were for sprain/strain injuries and 15.8% were for cuts/lacerations. The industry groups that accounted for 94.9% of the injuries were crop production, livestock production, and agricultural services. In the crop production group, horticultural specialties, fruits and tree nuts, and vegetables and melons groupings had an elevated relative injury index. The fruits and tree nuts group accounted for 15% of all agricultural related sprain/strain injuries. The livestock production groupings did not have an elevated injury index. In agricultural services, crop services, farm labor and management services, and landscape and horticultural services groupings had elevated injury indices. Landscape and horticultural services accounted for 26.5% of all agricultural related sprain/strain injuries. The back, ankle, and knee were the most likely body parts to be injured. The six industry groupings with elevated injury indices had indices greater than 1.5. These groups may have an increased potential of sustaining a sprain injury severe enough for submittal of a workers' compensation claim. [Description provided by NIOSH]
