Description:The transfer efficiency of high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray guns was compared to that of conventional spray guns in experiments involving the repeated spray painting of a car body shell. Air contaminant concentration, mass of paint used, painting time, and paint film thickness were measured during 16 experimental runs. Two coats of a base coat were applied to a Pontiac Grand Am body shell during each run. A run was conducted with either a conventional gravity fed spray painting gun or an HVLP gravity fed spray painting gun. Painting was done in a downdraft booth, modified to simulate a poorly operated spray painting booth. HVLP spray painting was about 30% more efficient than conventional spray painting and reduced particulate overspray by about 50%. Solvent exposure was reduced by about a factor of 2 for the spray painter. The authors conclude that use of HVLP spray guns should be encouraged, along with the use of other control options.
