Description:Welding is a common industrial process that generates complex aerosols of potentially hazardous metal fumes and gases. Millions of workers worldwide are exposed to welding aerosols daily. The health of welders is difficult to assess because of differences in worker populations, work area ventilation, welding processes and materials used, and other occupational exposures besides welding aerosols. Most long-time welders experience some type of respiratory disorder during their time of employment. Less information exists concerning the nonpulmonary health effects associated with welding. This chapter reviews the different types of welding processes and exposures and the health hazards associated with welding. [Description provided by NIOSH]
