Description:Scientists involved with aerosol measurements have available to them a diversity of aerosol monitors, ranging from sample collection on a filter for later analysis to complex direct-reading instruments, which detect the airborne particles in real time and display the concentration of airborne particles as a function of aerodynamic diameter. The use of the simplest or most complex device may introduce errors in measurement and interpretation. Typically, these errors include both biases and variability. While the data from the more complex sizing instruments may make such errors evident, they also occur in the less sophisticated filter collectors. Lack of recognition of these errors may affect the interpretation of aerosol measurements. The reported information should be presented with an analysis of the correctness or accuracy of the results.
