New NIOSH Programs for Preventing Occupational Traumatic Injury

  This report described six research themes that will constitute the NIOSH research program for the prevention of traumatic injuries which grew out of the 1991 congressional appropriation to expand occupational safety and health research at its Appalachian Laboratory for Occupational Safety and Health (ALOSH) in Morgantown, West Virginia. The mission of the safety and human factors engineering program at NIOSH was described. Research themes which have been suggested for inclusion were stress exposure assessment and measurement with the development of advanced methods for hazard exposure assessments; computerized anthropometry research and evaluation with improvements to the fit of workplace systems to workers; multifactorial assessment research on construction hazards with evaluation of synergistic stresses of construction tasks; simulation and analysis of fall exposure to understand and reduce the fall hazards at workplaces; computer aided equipment design and research for the purpose of developing appropriate equipment for jobs; and solutions for urgent or priority problems of occupationally related tasks with technical support for hazard evaluations and control development. The seven laboratories which will participate in the work were described, including the High Bay Laboratory, Human Factors Laboratory, the Protective Systems Laboratory, the Computerized Anthropometry Research and Evaluation Laboratory, the Functional Evaluation Laboratory, the Vibration Research Laboratory, and the Engineering Video Editing Laboratory.
