The Keokuk County Rural Health Study: Methodology and Demographics

  The sampling method, the protocol, and the demographic profile of adult subjects of the first 400 households enrolled in the Keokuk County Rural Health Study were described. The study was a population based, prospective study of environmental exposure and health status of residents in a rural Iowa county. The mean age of the adult subjects as 53.2 years. Women represented 53.7% of the sample. A higher percentage of farm households reported a net income that fell in the middle range of 20,000 to 49,999 dollars than did rural nonfarm and town households. Of the sample studied, 89.3% had graduated from high school. This included 94.8% for farmers, 88.2% for rural nonfarmers, and 86.9% for the townspeople. Among the females 21.4% were college graduates compared to 1.1% for men. Of the total sample, 31.4% had lived in Keokuk county all of their lives. Breaking that into sections, 52.1% of the male farmers had lived there all their lives while only 23.6% of the female farmers had done so. Residents of farm households tend to be younger and have a higher net household income than residents of rural nonfarm and town households. Farm women were more highly educated than farm men, and women in general were more highly educated than men. The authors suggest that future analyses of the data from children and adolescents will enrich the emerging picture of the effect of agricultural and occupational exposures on the health of an entire community in rural Iowa.
