Description:The two most promising substitutes, hexane (110543) and pentane (109660) for carbon-tetrachloride (56235) (CT), used in evaluating the adsorption capacity of charcoal in organic vapor cartridges and canisters, were evaluated. Numerous brands of cartridges were tested for both nonpowered and powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) cartridges. All cartridges were NIOSH certified. The conditioned air stream (50% or 80% relative humidity) containing the test agent was pushed through a single cartridge. Testing was conducted with 550 parts per million (ppm) pentane and 1,000ppm hexane at 64 liters/minute and 80% relative humidity, the most severe test condition for negative pressure organic cartridges. The breakthrough time for CT was 50 minutes, compared with 39.75 minutes for pentane and 36.96 minutes for hexane. The Weibull regression model showed that the results were not significantly different. The most severe PAPR organic vapor cartridge test condition for CT had a minimum breakthrough time of 24 minutes at 1,000ppm CT. The point estimates for pentane and hexane were determined using the CT breakthrough data as control conditions. The pentane point estimate was 50.02 minutes, and the hexane point estimate was 51.77 minutes. The authors conclude that the new tests for calibrating charcoal in cartridges show good reproducibility. [Description provided by NIOSH]
