Description:A historical hydrocarbon exposure assessment was conducted for a community based case/control epidemiologic study of renal disease, and methodology used in the study was evaluated. Methods used to arrive at exposure estimates included expert panels of industrial hygienists, literature surveys, and exposure databases. Occupational histories of 658 subjects were taken, and each job held by each subject was coded with the standard industrial classification (SIC) and the standard occupational classification (SOC). In all, 3159 SIC/SOC/decade combinations were entered into a relational database file. Between two and five industrial hygiene experts provided exposure estimates for each SIC. Data from the expert panel, the literature, and from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's computerized information system (OCIS) were individually evaluated to develop an estimated exposure for each SIC/SOC/decade combination. This estimate was used to calculate an estimated lifetime occupational hydrocarbon exposure for each subject. Where more than one data source was available for hydrocarbon exposure estimates, the estimates were frequently consistent. Where more than one hydrocarbon exposure estimate was provided by the expert panel, the estimates tended to be in general agreement. Limitations of the OSHA OCIS database were identified in the areas of job title classification, and number of analytes for each sample. The authors recommend that this type of study should be carried out using interviewers trained in industrial hygiene, and coders familiar with the area from which the study subjects are drawn.
