Description:An investigation was undertaken to assess the dermal pyrene (129000) exposure risk faced by coke oven workers. Twenty two workers from the coal-tar sludge handling area of a coke oven were enrolled in this study. Each subject provided a urine sample and completed a questionnaire on work practices, diet, and smoking habit. Urine samples were collected before and after subjects' work shifts, and were analyzed to determine levels of 1-hydroxypyrene (5315797) (1- HP), a pyrene metabolite. During work shifts personal breathing zone samples and bulk samples were collected and analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and coal tar pitch volatiles. The mean preshift and postshift 1-HP levels were 1.00 and 1.7 micromoles/moles creatine, respectively. Levels of pyrene detected in bulk and breathing zone samples were found to be minimal. The authors conclude that coke oven workers are at risk for dermal exposure to pyrene. [Description provided by NIOSH]
