Description:The respiratory function of textile workers employed in dyeing cotton and wool fibers was studied. Textile dyeing workers (97 male and 38 female) were tested for lung function before and after the morning shift by recording maximum expiratory flow volume (MEFV) curves, with 103 unexposed workers serving as controls. A questionnaire was administered to determine respiratory symptoms in the workers. The prevalence of all chronic respiratory symptoms was significantly higher in the exposed than in the control workers. Occupational asthma was present in 6% of exposed workers but was not seen in any of the controls. Nonsmokers with both long and short term work exposure had higher prevalences of dyspnea and rhinitis than control workers. Most symptoms were more prevalent in smokers than in nonsmokers. Smokers exposed for 10 years or less had a significantly higher prevalence of chronic phlegm than nonsmokers with the same duration of exposure, while smokers exposed for more than 10 years had significantly higher prevalences of chronic cough, chronic phlegm, and chronic bronchitis than nonsmokers. Results of ventilatory capacity tests prior to the workshift and following the workshift were significantly different. Ventilatory capacity values at the beginning of the shift were significantly lower in the exposed population compared to predicted values, suggesting a chronic effect. The authors conclude that textile dyeing workers may develop acute and chronic respiratory impairment as a result of their exposure to chemical products used in the industry, and that the effects are exacerbated by cigarette smoking.
