Exposure to Dust, Noise, and Pesticides, Their Determinants, and the Use of Protective Equipment Among California Farm Operators

  To investigate the hazardous exposures faced by farm and agriculture workers, a study was undertaken of the use of protective equipment by California farm operators and the types of exposures encountered in various types of farming. Telephone interviews regarding farm characteristics, farming practices, and protective equipment use were conducted with 1,947 farm operators in California. Dust, pesticide, and noise exposure levels varied widely between farm types. Field crop farmers reported the highest levels of exposure to noise and dust, while nursery farmers reported the highest levels of exposure to pesticides. Dust and noise exposure were positively correlated to time spent driving a tractor. There was no association found between reported exposures to dust, noise, and pesticides, and the presence of a closed tractor cabin. The use of protective equipment increased in frequency and regularity with increasing exposures to noise and pesticides, but not dust. The authors conclude that exposure risks vary widely across different farming types, and that the use of protective equipment is most closely associated with increased exposures to pesticides and noise.
