  In the year covered by this review, the regulations and practices of occupational hearing conservation have been scrutinized by several research groups. The need to incorporate multiple factors in the analysis of the hearing status of working populations is becoming widely accepted. Tools to address this need are being developed. Other important advances in the area include the appraisal of noise damage risk criteria, the evaluation of otoacoustic emissions as a complement to pure-tone audiometry, and alternative approaches in education in hearing loss prevention.
