  A number of single case reports as well as several epidemiologic surveys have suggested a pathogenetic link between exposure to silica and renal disease. The possible mechanisms may involve both direct (injury by silica) and indirect (immunologic) pathways. Systematic pathologic study has not been carried out so far in this regard. This is why we launched an extensive pathologic review of autopsy cases with occupational exposure to investigate the prevalence and multidisciplinary analysis of exposure-associated renal glomerular disease.
