Description:The efforts of federal,state, and national agencies to use human biological monitoring to protect human health after workplace and environmental exposures to chemicals and other hazardous agents will be discussed in terms of past, present, and future directions of selected agencies. These will be the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL)of the United Kingdom, and the California Department of Health Services (CA DHS). The essential role of biological monitoring relative to actual absorbed dose compared with environmental and workplace exposure monitoring like personal breathing zone air sampling and skin measurements will be illustrated with case histories.
