Interpretation of Genetic Data for Medical and Public Health Uses

  The increase in the number and size of genetic databases raises questions on how practitioners will apply this information for improved clinical care and public health. Before there can be effective and safe applications, various interpretive issues need to be addressed. These include the 1) need for population thinking about genetic information, 2) extension of traditional biomedical paradigm to include genetic information, and 3) attention to issues in the application of genetic information to qualitative and quantitative risk assessment. Premature or unprepared application of genetic information in medicine and public health could cause harm and societal problems. Consideration of these issues while database developments are in the relatively early stages may reduce untoward impacts. [Description provided by NIOSH]
