  An overview of the NIOSH occupational safety and health guidelines for Superfund activities is presented. Critical elements are outlined for site safety plans, site surveys and monitoring plans. The gathering of accurate and adequate information to prepare a plan of action to clean up abandoned hazardous waste sites is the first step and continues throughout any Superfund activity. Major emphasis is placed on selecting personal protective equipment with consideration for preventing heat stress. Decontamination is stressed to prevent exposure of other site workers as well as off-site personnel and the public. Worker training and medical monitoring are key components in a comprehensive occupational safety and health program for hazardous waste workers [Description provided by NIOSH]
