  Histoplasmosis produces flu like symptoms and can result in chronic lung disease or blindness and, in some cases, death. The pathogenic fungus that causes histoplasmosis, Histoplasma capsulatum, is generally found in soil or soil mixed with bird or bat droppings, Workers at risk of exposure include construction and demolition workers. bridge inspectors and painters, farmers, gardeners. chimney cleaners, HVAC installers, roofers, and pest control workers. The lack of a rapid, inexpensive analytical method has hampered the ability to identify the fungus in environmental samples and has consequently limited the ability to prevent or reduce occupational risk in a timely way. Such a method has been developed and patented by NIOSH. Guidelines have also been published on how to prevent or mitigate exposure.
