Description:The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is a federal agency within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dedicated to preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace through research and prevention. NIOSH has information and publications available on subjects relevant to veterinarians and their staff. Publications are available free of charge on a wide range of subjects ranging from specific workplace hazards to psychosocial issues such as stress and violence. Publications range from short informational brochures or pamphlets to lengthy more technical documents that summarize the available literature on specific workplace hazards. One of the most popular resources is the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards that presents key information and data in abbreviated tabular form for more than 600 workplace chemicals. One focus area of NIOSH research is women's occupational safety and health issues. Information is available on various topics including musculoskeletal disorders, job stress, reproductive hazards, violence, and cancer. Information for health care workers is available on biological, chemical, and physical hazards including bloodbome pathogens, tuberculosis, ethylene oxide, latex allergy, nitrous oxide, ergonomics, and violence. Brochures on glutaraldehyde and violence in the workplace were recently published. Some information is also available in Spanish. Your input is requested. If you have ideas for educational materials (that we could create] on workplace hazards that would be helpful to you and your staff please contact NIOSH. [Description provided by NIOSH]
