Description:Asymmetric distribution of major phospholipid classes across membranes is a fundamental characteristic of all cells whose disturbance is incompatible with physiological functions of membranes and with cell viability. 1,2 Under normal conditions, phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SPM) are located primarily in the outer leaflet of plasma membrane, whereas aminophospholipidsphosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS)-are found almost entirely in the inner leaflet. 1-3 Transmembrane migration and extemalization of PS by apoptotic cells are considered to be the triggering events for their recognition by cognate "scavenger" receptors of macrophages.4 This is followed by phagocytosis and safe digestion of apoptotic cells, thus preventing development of an inflammatory response.
