Description:Health effects of exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (117817) (DEHP) were reviewed. Topics included: physical and chemical properties; occupational exposure to DEHP; kinetics and metabolism; acute toxicity; biochemical effects; skin and eye irritation; chronic toxicity; reproductive, embryotoxic and teratogenic effects; mutagenicity and genotoxicity; carcinogenicity; and effects on man. Time weighted average exposures in a phthalate manufacturing facility were 0.02 to 4.1mg/m3 for six heavily exposed workers. No accumulation has been observed. DEHP was found to have low acute toxicity. Long term exposures to rats has caused testicular atrophy. DEHP was carcinogenic and teratogenic in tests in rodents. Most genotoxicity tests have been negative. However, certain tests have indicated that DEHP may affect the genome in-vitro. [Description provided by NIOSH]
