Description:Information on and recommended standards for vanadium (7440622) exposure are presented. Guidelines for environmental vanadium concentrations and recommendations relating to medical monitoring, product labeling, use of personal protective equipment, worker education, work practices and workplace hygiene, and environmental monitoring and recordkeeping are included. Data on the biological effects of vanadium in humans and laboratory animals is reviewed, and results of air sampling in selected workplaces are provided. Methods of air sampling and analysis are described. The author proposes a 15 minute ceiling limit of 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM) for vanadium compounds, and a 10 hour per day, 40 hour per week time weighted average limit of 0.1mg/CuM for metallic vanadium and vanadium-carbide. Additional studies are recommended on the effects of chronic vanadium exposure to humans, acute and chronic effects of exposure to small vanadium concentrations, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of vanadium, and methods for analyzing vanadium halides and oxyhalides.
