Description:The SHARP Study uses a variety of exposure assessment approaches at the individual level and the more global level, incorporating worker estimates (force matching, job content, psychosocial demands, social support, work scheduling), direct measurement (significant push/pull, lifting, pinch and grip forces), observational methods of physical demands (upper extremity postures and motions in terms of amplitude, frequency, and duration), and departmental-level measures of work organization. These data collection methods allow us to input variables into existing event-based and time-based exposure assessment methods (RULA, REBA, HAL, Strain Index) as well as to add precision to estimates of risk based on more quantitative time-based methods. It is hoped that these detailed exposure assessment methods used by ourselves and others in prospective studies will ultimately lead to more efficient and easy-to-use exposure assessment methods for practitioners.
