Description:A standard for occupational exposure to asbestos fibers and dusts is recommended in terms of environmental, medical, labeling, personal protective equipment and clothing, appraisal of employees of hazards, work practice, and monitoring and recording requirements. Biological effects of exposure are reviewed, including extent of exposure, early historical reports, epidemiological studies, animal toxicity, and correlation of exposure and effect; with review of environmental data, development of standard (including basis for previous standards, U.S. Emergency Standard, and basis for recommended standard), compatibility with emission standards, air sampling principles and methods, numerical hazard rating system, and material safety data sheets. Topics include carcinogenicity, fibrogenicity, pathogenicity, and cytotoxic effects; chemical and physical properties of various types, including chrysotile, amosite crocidolite, and tremolite; histopathological and morphological phenomena, particularly in respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts; reactivity; fire and explosion hazards; and hazards in various materials, and operations and industries, including textiles, insulation, construction, mining, milling, paper and packing, spraying, and pipemaking.
