  In the absence of regulations that mandate safe-lifting policies or the use of mechanical equipment to lift and transfer patients at national or state levels (except Texas state legislation requiring safe patient handling and movement programs effective January 1, 2006), healthcare facilities must embrace proactive approaches to control ergonomic hazards in healthcare settings and prevent back injuries among the nation's healthcare workforce. Research has shown that safe-lifting policies are an essential part of safe patient handling and movement programs and can be highly effective for reducing the risk of injury to frontline caregivers while improving the quality of patient care. A safe-lifting policy and safe patient handling and movement program can reduce the physical stresses of nursing work, improve retention of healthcare staff by reducing the number of nurses leaving the profession due to back pain, and improve the quality of the lives of healthcare workers by reducing injury, sick leave, and fatigue.
