Description:The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and was formed from the Bureau of Occupational Safety and Health in the U. S. Public Health Service. Under the 1970 Act NIOSH had no mandate for mining related activities; however, the responsibilities of the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare under the provisions of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, were transferred from the Bureau of Occupational Safety and Health to NIOSH. Thus, betWeen 1970 and 1977, NIOSH mining related efforts were concentrated on the coal mining industry. There was some research activity in the metal and non-metallic area, primarily dealing with uranium miners and an investigation of silica and diesel exhaust exposures conducted jointly with the Bureau of Mines and the Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration (now MSHA). With the passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, the NIOSH mandate was expanded to include new health-related responsibilities applicable to the entire mining industry. Three papers will be presented at this session to provide an overview of NIOSH activities which implement various provisions of the 1977 Act. This paper presents a review of the Mining Industries Surveillance Project and the Mining Heal th Hazard Evaluations Project. [Description provided by NIOSH]
