Description:Beryllium is a lightweight metal that is transparent to x-rays and has neutron-moderating properties that make it an integral part of nuclear applications in weapons, energy, and research. It lends unique properties of high strength to metals to which it is alloyed, chiefly beryllium copper, with a beryllium content of 2-4%. Beryllium oxide is an insoluble salt with high heat conductivity, which leads to its use in specialty ceramics and in chip manufacture for semiconductors. Soluble beryllium salts are intermediates in beryllium refining and alloy manufacture. Historically, beryllium phosphors were used in fluorescent light manufacture. Their use was discontinued in 1949 because of the recognition of chronic beryllium disease in that industry. Beryllium exposure occurs in nuclear industries, metal reclamation, beryllium ceramics manufacture, and beryllium extraction. In addition, metal workers and users of alloys, such as dental laboratory technicians, may be exposed to beryllium. In alloys, the beryllium content may be unknown or unrecognized as a hazard.
