Description:Multiple types of automated analyses of large numbers of particles are correlated and displayed using an interactive data analysis method. Hundreds of particles are analyzed by both scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and by scanning Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Interactive data analysis software is then used to correlate the measurements between the two techniques. Additional software is used to visualize and manipulate the huge amounts of particle-by-particle data. This permits prompt visual comparison of complementary data for any set of particles. For instance, particle total elemental composition versus particle surface elemental composition is graphically displayed on SEM and AES images of fields of respirable mineral particles, and can be examined using virtual reality techniques. The method can be generalized to other combinations of automated imaging and analysis. [Description provided by NIOSH]
