Study and Reduction of Noise from an Electric Router

Description:The testing methodologies and results presented in this paper address the airborne and structure noise contributors of an electric router used in the construction industry. Sound pressure, intensity and power measurements were used to identify and rank all possible airborne noise sources from the power tool. Using the data collected, several acoustic treatments were investigated. The air-borne noise from the fan blades was the greatest contributor to the overall sound pressure level from the router. From the various mock-up tests, it was concluded that placing the 3M Thinsulate foam over the intake and exhaust vents for the motor was the best option for reducing the noise emitted from the router. When the 3M Thinsulate acoustic foam was placed over the vents, the sound pressure level from the router was reduced by about 8 dBA. According to OSHA standards, this new level is well below hearing impairment levels and provides a much safer working environment. While this is a large decrease in the overall sound pressure level created by the router, before implementing this recommended solution a thermal analysis of the cooling requirements of the router during operation is required.
