Description:The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the effects of noise on people and their hearing. Noise is a universal problem that damages hearing and impacts quality of life. Most industrial environments have noise as a component. This chapter will provide an introduction to the functioning of the peripheral auditory system, protective mechanisms of the ear, noise damage and how it is assessed, and some discussion of how noise regulations are determined.
