Clinical Features of Silicosis

  The prevention of silicosis has not yet been achieved. If the past leads the way to the future, then it is by no means guaranteed that this disease can ever be totally abolished. Cases continue despite aggressive enforcement policies by regulatory agencies, attempts at dissemination of very readable materials aimed at workers and management, and respiratory dust exposure standards which appear protective and are in place. It is more than frustrating for all parties to see reports of aggressive silicosis in young workers. Perhaps, like the crusade against drunk driving, a determined effort through the contemporary methods of communication might enlighten American society and its workers about the very destructive health effects of silica exposure. Furthermore, both the physician and the affected worker are helpless when a diagnosis of silicosis has been made, and there is no way to affect the natural history of the processes that are underway. What must be developed is a type of "salvage therapy" that has the potential to reverse, or at least dramatically lessen, the aggressive natural history of silicosis that develops over relatively short time periods. Perhaps, if the illness cannot be prevented, an approach to lessen the effect of the fibrosis induced by this dust can be developed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
