Workplace-Related Lower Extremity Disorders: Workplace Adaptations with Case Studies

  This two-part case study describes workplace modifications that were applied, in part I, for the prevention of the recurrence of an acute injury resulting from a fall while descending a staircase and, in part 2, to accommodate the subsequent long-term pain, discomfort, and work restrictions of the injured worker. The task that was being performed when the injury occurred was assessed using the OSHA standard for walking-working surfaces, namely related to staircase design and construction and an ergonomic formula that suggests an efficient and safe relationship between staircase riser, tread depth, and slope. An ergonomic assessment of the task also was performed using the REBA tool. Each assessment method discovered noncompliances and risk factors that were determined to be likely contributors to the accident. The workplace modifications were directed toward correcting the non compliances and eliminating or significantly reducing the ergonomic risk factors that were identified. A brief follow-up approximately 3 years after the accident indicated that the modifications were instrumental in allowing the injured worker to return to his regular job and to prevent recurrence of a similar accident and injury.
