Description:This Focus Report provides detailed information on injuries in Washington State's trucking industry. The trucking industry has some of the highest workers' compensation claim rates and costs in Washington State. Data in this report are from 1997-2005 (fatalities from 1998-2005), with detailed data for the four largest trucking sub-sectors (General Freight, Specialized Freight, Couriers and Messengers, and Waste Management). This report is further broken down to describe the four most common and costly injury types (upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders, falls, struck by or against and motor vehicle collisions) for the industry as a whole and for each large sub-sector. From 1997-2005 there were over 21,000 lost work time claims and almost 38,000 medical only claims in Washington's trucking industry. This report provides employers, supervisors, employees in the trucking industry, along with safety and health professionals, with information on claims, claim rates, costs, common causes and prevention ideas. By engaging and working with industry and other stakeholders, TIRES develops educational materials to prevent injuries in the trucking industry. [Description provided by NIOSH]
