  The number of health care professionals is large and expected to grow substantially. These workers are exposed to a variety of occupational respiratory hazards. Identifying these hazards is important, because comprehensive exposure prevention and infection control strategies can prevent adverse health effects. However, the respiratory hazards and associated diseases among health care professionals are not well documented in the United States. The data presented here suggest that asthma and respiratory infections are respiratory problems for which health care professionals are at especially increased risk, and for which prevention strategies among health care professionals should be implemented. There is currently no national work-related respiratory surveillance system in the United States. A more comprehensive surveillance system is needed to better evaluate the public health issue of work-related respiratory conditions. Furthermore, there is an increasing need for a surveillance system that allows for the evaluation of the impacts of interventions, which may require surveillance of hazard prevalence.
