The use of the SIMTRAC device to simulate tractor accidents and overturns was assessed in relation to American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) standard S306.3, the validity of input data obtained from published literature and industrial sources, and the influence of surface tire factors. A total of three side overturn simulations were performed using a full sized tractor with a weight of 4600 kilograms, a wheel base of 2.57 meters, and a tread width of 2.03 meters. The first two simulations mimicked tractor motion during an upset on a roadside ditch bank as the tractor followed the edge of the roadbed with wheel motion on either a soil or concrete surface. The third simulation depicted tractor motion under the conditions described by the ASAE standard S306.3 side overturn test. The accident simulations were described in relation to the center of mass of the tractor body and the wheel centers, the final position of the tractor, front and rear tire forces, kinetic and potential energy values, and the velocity components of the tractor body during the overturn. Comparisons of the simulated overturns with published accident reports showed similar tractor positions at the end of the upset and a significant influence of surface tire parameters. The authors conclude that the SIMTRAC can adequately simulate accidental overturns of full sized tractors including the ASAE standard S306.3 using industrial or published data.
