Description:Rationale and recommendations for particle size selective sampling of aerosol particles in the workplace were discussed. The historical background of the development of particle size selective threshold limit values (TLVs) was described. It was noted that the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has established a committee to recommend size selective aerosol sampling procedures for collecting aerosol fractions likely to be deposited in the respiratory tract. The anatomical structures of the respiratory tract important for inhalation and particle size sampling considerations were summarized. Size selective sampling criteria for inspirable mass fractions and thoracic and respirable mass fractions of aerosols were reviewed. A simple equation for determining the tolerance limits for sampling inspirable mass fractions was presented. The tolerance limits for sampling thoracic and respirable mass fractions were considered to be a cumulative lognormal function of 10 microns with a minimum geometric standard deviation of 1.4. Sampler efficiencies needed for sampling inspirable, thoracic, and respirable mass fractions were discussed. The use of size selection in establishing TLVs was discussed. A flow chart of the information required for developing particle size selective TLVs was presented. The authors recommend that the ACGIH should develop TLVs for all inspirable particulate mass fractions that may be hazardous anywhere in the respiratory tract. [Description provided by NIOSH]
