Description:A solid sorbent sampling tube for nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2) and nitric-oxide (10102439) (NO) was developed for sampling in the concentration range of the proposed NIOSH standards of 1 and 25 parts per million (ppm) for workplace NO2 and NO, respectively. The sampling tube contained two 400 milligram (mg) sections of triethylamine (TEA) impregnated molecular sieve and one 800mg section of oxidizer in a glass tube. Air containing between 3 and 6ppm NO2 was passed through the tube at rates up to 150 cubic centimeters per minute. The collection efficiency of the tube was 100 percent. The amount of NO2 collected in the first TEA section was dependent upon the section mass. Approximately 97 percent of a sample of 3ppm NO2 was retained by 400mg of TEA. NO recovery was limited by the use of chromium-trioxide as oxidizer. Use of the Drager oxidizer yielded approximately 100 percent recovery of a sample of 5ppm NO passed through tubes containing 300mg TEA. Approximately 84 percent recovery of NO as NO2 was obtained for samples of 25ppm NO with a tube containing 400mg TEA. The application of the tube to an occupational environment was described.
