Description:Aspects pertaining to the risk of cancer from asbestos (1332214) exposure are discussed. Studies are reviewed concerning the carcinogenicity of asbestos, current perspectives on the incidence and course of asbestos related diseases, and public health considerations in the control of asbestos related diseases. Comparatively few studies of asbestos associated diseases were undertaken before the 1920s. Shortly thereafter, it was discovered that many of the asbestos related diseases had a 20 year latency period. Diseases associated with and symptoms related to asbestos exposure include pleural abnormalities, lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and gastrointestinal cancer. Amosite (12172735), anthophyllite (16829439), chrysotile (12001295), and crocidolite (12001284) have all been known to produce neoplasms and other disorders. Research from the 1960s to current times has found many answers regarding dose/disease response, dose/induction period, period of clinical latency, multiple factor interactions, family contact diseases, and neighborhood exposure. Current research interests include the effects of low concentration exposures; asbestos contamination of public water supplies; maintenance, repair, demolition, and disposal of asbestos materials; and the identification of high risk groups.
