Description:The elemental composition of seven representative airborne grain dusts was analyzed. Airborne dusts of barley, corn, Durum wheat, flax oats, and spray wheat were collected at active port grain elevators. Settled grain dust was also collected and represented an approximate 20 year accumulation. Boron (7440428) content was determined. Mercury (7439976) (Hg) was determined by a manual cold vapor technique. Other elements were analyzed by spark source mass spectroscopy. However, carbon (7440440), hydrogen (1333740), nitrogen (7727379), and oxygen (7782447), which constituted the bulk of the dust samples, were not analyzed. The data showed that airborne or settled grain dusts differed from each other with respect to elemental composition. The concentration of zinc (7440666) ranged from a low of 16 parts per million (ppm) in corn dust to a high of 430ppm in Duram wheat samples. No tin (7440315) was detected in the corn samples. Flax contained 0.15ppm tin, barley contained 0.94ppm tin, and spray wheat contained 1.70ppm tin. The concentration of the elements analyzed was lower for corn dust than for the other dusts.
