Description:Literature on coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is reviewed. The immunological aspects of CWP are discussed. Experimental animal studies have shown that coal dust aggravates infections due to Mycobacteria. Epidemiological surveys of respiratory symptoms among miners in Great Britain are described. Types and causes of functional lung impairment in German coal workers are discussed. Mortality data on American coal miners is summarized. Validation criteria for the X-ray classification of pneumoconiosis are discussed. Experimental animal studies that show that polyvinyl-pyridine-n-oxide can prevent experimentally induced silicosis are described. Surveys of the incidence of CWP among anthracite and bituminous coal miners are discussed; the incidence was 60 percent among anthracite and 47 percent among bituminous miners. The lung mechanics of CWP are considered. The difficulties of measuring pulmonary dust deposition are discussed. It is noted that the increased prevalence of nonspecific obstructive airways disease among coal miners is still unexplained. The incidence varies with geographic location. The author suggests that the variation is a consequence of dust induced industrial bronchitis. [Description provided by NIOSH]
