Description:A personal vinyl-chloride (75014) monitoring device was developed. This new method employed a small, light weight, reusable personal monitor that did not require a source of power. The sampling device was a badge, 41 by 48 millimeters (mm), with a thickness of 7mm and was made of single backed dimethylsilicone rubber. The vinyl- chloride permeated the membrane and was trapped on 20 to 40 mesh activated charcoal. The charcoal was removed and analyzed by gas chromatography. The method was also tested for temperature and humidity interferences. Concentrations of vinyl-chloride detected ranged from 5 parts per billion to 50 parts per million. Sampling time ranged from 10 minutes to 24 hours. Variations in temperature and humidity had no effect. Interference studies were run on several common pollutants encountered in vinyl-chloride factories. These included sulfur-dioxide (7446095), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), ozone (10028156), ethylene-dichloride (107062), and chlorine (7782505). Except for ethylene-dichloride, no significant interference was found. The authors conclude that this method can be used in monitoring programs required by OSHA regulations. Convenience to the wearer is a significant feature of the device. [Description provided by NIOSH]
