Description:The NIOSH occupational health surveillance system is described. Methods for compiling and identifying occupational health hazards and effects nationwide are detailed. Using this system, the frequency and types of injuries in a study of the United States logging industry are reported. Mortality studies from Washington and California are included. The author concludes that upon completion of the logging study recommendations for improving safety monitoring and for further studies to improve health and accident prevention programs will be generated.
