Description:Design criteria for packages and containers are reviewed. Available literature and data sources are discussed, and organizations that are capable of providing design information are listed. Research into the biomechanics of lifting and materials handling, including the importance of such factors as sex and body type, is summarized. Psychological research concerning the most effective ways to display information on packages is also discussed. General safety guidelines for the handling and structure of containers are also reviewed. The authors conclude that more research must be done before precise, reliable standards can be formulated.
