Description:A photocell plethysmographic procedure to determine vascular insufficiency of the fingertips was evaluated. Four male and four female subjects with Raynaud's disease were tested using photocell plethysmography. A comparison group of 17 normal subjects was also tested. Subjects placed a fingertip into the plethysmograph and the opposite hand into ice water. Photocell plethysmography was continuously recorded. Blood pressure was measured before and after testing. Time to complete recovery from cold was significantly longer in Raynaud's subjects than in comparison. The authors conclude that the test is useful for evaluating peripheral vascular insufficiency. They recommend further testing on a larger population. [Description provided by NIOSH]
