An Investigation of Health Complaints and Job Stress in Video Display Operations [1981]

  Job stress and health effects were evaluated in video display terminal (VDT) operators. A questionnaire on job demands, job stressors, job stress level, psychological mood, health complaints, and working conditions was administered to about 250 VDT operators at 150 comparison subjects from five related workplaces. Clerical VDT operators reported more job stress health problems than comparisons and professional VDT operators, but both groups of VDT operators reported more career problems than comparisons. Psychological mood profiles were similar between groups. Clerical VDT operators reported job stressors of workload, work pace, lack of control over job activities, boredom, and concerns over career development, and reported health problems relating to the visual and musculoskeletal systems and to emotional health. Clerical VDT operators reported significantly more of all types of problems than professional VDT operators. The authors conclude that job content and VDT interact to produce problems for VDT operators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
