Description:The airborne concentrations of N-nitrosomorpholine (59892) (NMOR) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (NDMA) in rubber and tire industry facilities (SIC-3011) were studied. Air and bulk samples were taken at various locations in a tire chemical facility, an industrial rubber products factory, an aircraft tire facility, and a synthetic rubber and latex factory. Samples were analyzed for NMOR and NDMA by chromatography. In the chemical factory, NMOR concentrations ranged from 0.07 micrograms per cubic meter in the lunchroom to 5.1 micrograms per cubic meter at the N- nitrosodiphenylamine reactor. NDMA concentrations at the chemical facility ranged from 0.0 in the lunchroom to 0.3 micrograms per cubic meter at the bismorpholinecarbamylsulfenamide centrifuge. No NMOR was detected in the atmosphere of the industrial rubber products factory or the synthetics facility, and no NDMA was found in the aircraft tire or synthetics factories. In the industrial rubber products facility, NDMA concentrations varied from 0.07 to from the ground near the chemical factory contained detectable amounts of NMOR. The authors conclude that workers in the rubber and tire industry may be exposed by inhalation to airborne N- nitrosamines. They recommend industrial hygiene surveys of rubber and tire facilities.
