• Description:
  The health hazards of polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) (PVC) film were studied among meat wrappers (SIC-5411) in the Baltimore, Maryland area. Only trace amounts of hydrogen-cyanide (74908) and hydrocarbons were detected in the work atmosphere near improperly operated dispensing machines and generally those workers affected by PVC fumes had prior histories of respiratory distress. Benzyl- chloride (100447), a known respiratory irritant and PVC thermal decomposition product, was not detected in amounts greater than several parts per million. The author concludes that PVC fumes present no health hazards to healthy persons employed as meat wrappers. [Description provided by NIOSH]
