Description:The etiology and symptoms of coal workers' pneumoconiosis are reviewed. Diagnostic criteria for simple pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis are discussed, including X-ray findings and results of respiratory function tests. Synergistic effects between cigarette smoking and coal dust exposure are considered. The author concludes that the disease can be prevented by effective means of dust control.
