Description:The effectiveness of open versus closed-face cassettes in aerosol sampling was compared. Thirty breathing zone filter samples from industrial paint spraying operations were taken by open and closed filters. An additional 10 samples of each type were taken in industrial environments, where dusts, mists, and fumes were generally encountered. There was a wide variation between open and closed-face sample pairs. Open-face filters collected approximately 30 percent more aerosol than closed-face filters. The authors conclude that closed-face filters are significantly less efficient. They note that worker exposure is probably being underestimated when closed-face filters are used in total aerosol sampling. Open-face cassettes should be used for total aerosol sampling.
