Description:The effectiveness of protective clothing for reducing worker exposures to pesticides was investigated. Thirteen workers from a citrus grove in Florida were monitored during work operations while wearing normal work clothes, a respirator, or specially treated or untreated cotton coveralls (type of treatment unspecified). Alpha cellulose patches were attached to the interior and exterior surfaces of the clothing to measure exposure to ethion (563122). Urine samples were collected and analyzed metabolites. Penetration of ethion was greatest when the subjects wore their normal work clothes, was reduced by the use of a respirator, and was markedly decreased when the subjects wore the coveralls. Treatment of the overalls did not affect penetration. Urinary metabolite concentrations were also reduced when workers wore the coveralls. The authors conclude that protective clothing can significantly reduce worker exposures to pesticides. [Description provided by NIOSH]
